1 Samuel 15.22-23
The Lord gave King Saul specific instructions to destroy Amalek as punishment to what they did to Israel. To spare no one including their livestock.
The King disobeyed.
מְרִי
Rebellion. To provoke by defiance. To disobey what you know is right.
פָּצַר
Stubbornness. Presumption. Saying to yourself “I know better than you”
“Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
he has also rejected you from being king.”
G-d reveals in his word what is right and true. Do we listen and obey or do we think we know better than Him?
King Saul was removed from office and replaced by David.
Why did Saul disobey? The answer is in the next verse;
“because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.”
He listened to the people putting pressure on him and not the word of G-d
